Paul (Paul Giamatti), an often reviled professor at a New England prep school, must stay behind during Christmas break to babysit some students unable to return home. Finding himself without family support or anywhere to turn, Paul forms unlikely bonds with troublemaker Angus (Dominic Sessa), while head cook Mary (Da'Vine Joy Randolph), an individual grieving over losing a son during Vietnam, becomes his confidante and eventual confidant.
